How can I improve my fitness for Army ROTC?

Strong_All_Along asked:

I’m female, 19, & currently in community college. I’m going to apply for a 2-year Army ROTC scholarship about a few months short of one year from now. I have a 4.0 GPA, I’m going to join school clubs such as Student Government and Phi Theta Kappa (Honors Society). I’m also going to volunteer at a local hospital. So I think I’m competitive as far as grades & extracurriculars go. But as for my fitness, I’m struggling, I can only run about a half of a mile before I have to walk. I can only do about 20 sit ups & I can only do about 10 push ups. I go to the gym every other day & run as much as I can & do sit ups & push ups. What else can I do?? Need to be above APFT standards with in one year from now to attend LTC. Is there really anything else I could be doing to help me improve faster? Any help is appreciated! If I continue what I’m doing now, do you think I could pass the APFT in time?
I’m within weight standards, I’m 5′ 8.5″ & weight 155 lbs.
